I get tons of questions as to why my hosting accounts are more expensive than everyone else. The simple answer is we set up VPS hosting accounts for each and every client so the client is setup for success. There are a plethora of hosting solutions out there to host your website. Many of them are very cheap. These cheap hosting solutions are called shared servers.
A shared hosting service is a web hosting service where many websites reside on one web server connected to the Internet. This is generally the most economical option for hosting, as the overall cost of server maintenance is spread over many customers.
The best way to think of web hosting is using the apartment building metaphor. An apartment building has many apartments that people rent from the owner of the unit, or property manager. A shared hosting service is an apartment building where each account is an apartment renting space to host their website. In this case the property manager is the hosting provider. This shared hosting solution thus becomes a low cost hosting solution. However, the downside to shared hosting is availability of server resources. If one website is getting tons of traffic, the other websites on the server will suffer.

Going back to our apartment building metaphor, where you have a number of apartments in the building, and the top floor is the penthouse. This penthouse apartment typically takes up the entire floor that is dedicated to the person renting it out or owning it. So on a shared server, you have a bunch of accounts which are the apartments, and your penthouse apartment is your website that is dedicated to you. Since you have the entire “floor” dedicated to your website, you will not be affected by the performance of the other websites on the rest of the server. (That is unless the server itself has a problem.)
